Homework

Please check your student's assignment planner each night. Look for Everyday Math study links and weekly word study words. Practicing Times Tables and reading a book report book can also be done. Social Studies and Science will be assigned as units are studied.

Literacy

Your child will also be assigned a book report on a particular genre such as mystery or historical fiction. The genres will vary throughout the year. Your child's teacher will send home details about these book report projects as they are assigned. Word study, writing, and reading are included in our Literacy block each morning.

Math

Fourth Grade uses the Everyday Math program. There are twelve units of study covering geometry, fractions, decimals, percents, problem solving, and measurement to name a few. Besides homework and study links each night, students are encouraged to practice their Times Tables for quick recall. This is essential for progress in math. Just 5 to 10 minutes every night would be helpful.

Writing

Fourth Grade uses the "Step Up to Writing" program. Your child should plan their thoughts before writing by using the pre-write plan in this program. First, a good topic sentence is important. Next, major ideas are called star ideas. Your student should be able to give at least two details or explanations about each star idea. Finally, the concluding sentence is the topic sentence restated differently. Transition words are used with the star sentences. Your child will be able to explain and use this format this year.

Science

We have many units in Science including; Watery Earth, Matter and Nature's Decomposers.

Social Studies

We begin our study of US regions with immigration. We learn how immigrants helped shape and influence the regions of our country. Our Ellis Island Day re-enactment is always a fun and memorable event. Fourth grade also studies the State of Maine, including famous Maine people such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The Longfellow Tea celebrates the student's poetry writings as well as the works of Longfellow.
